Vehicle tow dolly trailers feature ramps and a carrying pan to load the vehicle and lock its front end in place. They are often used to tow a car or truck behind a recreational vehicle (RV) or a moving truck in order to more efficiently get the vehicle from point A to point B. It’s also handy to have a smaller “runabout” vehicle for grocery and sightseeing runs after you park your RV.
Tow dollies support everything from front-wheel-drive small and mid-size cars to full-size cars, vans, SUVs, and trucks. You should always follow the vehicle manufacturer’s towing instructions, especially for rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive automobiles—including manufacturer directives to disconnect the driveshaft or to use a different type of trailer altogether, such as a flatbed.
Depending on the model and its configuration, a tow dolly may support vehicles of 4,250 to 5,000 pounds (1,928 to 2,268 kilograms) with outside tread widths of 40 to 80 inches (1,016 to 2,032 millimeters).

A key feature of tow dolly trailers is a supplemental braking system (such as surge brakes) for better safety. Some come with self-steering wheels to track along with the lead vehicle and reduce turning clearance requirements. A few models offer reduced loading angles to keep lower vehicles from scraping the ground during transport.
Other features include LED tail lights, the ability to fold up when not in use, and either maintenance-free sealed bearings or bearings that can be re-lubricated without disassembly.
