How To Buy The Right Landscaping Trailer
The function of a landscaping trailer is simple, to move equipment from one location to another, but that does not mean that just any trailer works. You need to be sure the trailer has the proper space and weight capacity for your equipment along with any additional security features you may need. Here are some tips to help you buy the right landscaping trailer.
Check What You’re Hauling
You should know the weight of any equipment, such as mowers, cutters, or loaders, as well as hand tools, dirt, mulch, and other items you need to haul to a jobsite. Your trailer needs to be able to support all that weight. The total weight of your equipment plus the weight of the empty trailer, known as gross trailer weight (GTW) or gross vehicle weight (GVW), should not exceed the manufacturer’s limit.
Landscaping trailer manufacturers often offer both single- and tandem-axle versions, with the latter typically supporting gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) of up to 7,000 pounds (3,175 kilograms). You also need to consider the limits of your towing vehicle.
Know Your Dimensions
Weight isn’t the only consideration, as the trailer also needs to be long enough to meet your needs. The most common trailer lengths are 10 or 12 feet (3 to 3.6 meters), but some are 16 ft (4.9 m) or even 20 ft (6.1 m). The most common width is 5 ft (1.5 m), but you can find as wide as 8 ft (2.4 m).
Explore Landscaping Trailer Features
Many landscaping trailers have reinforced sidewalls—often 2 ft (0.6 m) high or lower, although taller ones are available—and tie-downs to secure equipment and cover bulk landscaping materials and other small items. Some manufacturers also offer enclosed trailers for increased security, weather protection, or to haul items that might otherwise fly loose. For ease when loading and unloading, most trailers also feature a ramp gate built to support the weight of large landscaping equipment, such as commercial riding mowers and garden tractors.
